At least one person has died and 51 others have not been accounted for, officials say, after the collapse of a 12-storey residential complex north of Miami.

In search of survivors rescuers are fighting the rubble and a boy was pulled live out.

The number of people at that time in the building is unknown.

The Surfside complex was constructed in 1980. Approximately half of the 130 units have been affected.

Cantonal Commissioner José Díaz said that 51 people believed that they had been living in that building had yet to be contacted.
